Stanford Amateur Radio Club

The club had the following number of members during 1963-64:

The officers were as follows:

• Fall quarter:

• Winter Quarter: same as Fall Quarter
• Spring Quarter:

The club held monthly meetings throughout the quarter and participated in numerous activities. Some of these were as follows:

• The club office in 310 Crothers was reclaimed and put to use. Club meetings and other business was conducted from this office.
• Classes in code and theory for beginners were offered fall and winter quarters.
• The Club station, W6YX, located behind Ryan High Voltage Lab, was fixed up and new equipment installed. Numerous hours of on the air operation time was logged by various members.
• The club and several members joined MARS (Military Affiliate Radio Service). These members participated in weekly emergency net communications with MARS.
• The club published a monthly newsletter which was mailed to all members. This publication included news of the month and gave information on the forthcoming meetings.
• The club participated in the Sweepstakes contest sponsored by the ARRL. Ten members put in 32 hours of on-the-air time over two weekends to win a ninth place in this region for the group classification.
• The club assisted with communications for several groups including the Stanford Crew during several races. "Phone patches" were run for many students as a service.
• The club reduced data for Project OSCAR (orbital satellite carrying amateur radio) and put into form for punching on IBM cards.

The club had several speakers including:

• Dr. Villard of the Stanford Electrical Engineering Department who spoke on the early days of W6YX.
• John Troster, author of articles in the ARRL publication, QST, who talked on his process and motivation in writing articles. He also presented his latest article for the club's suggestions and approval.
• Harley Gabrielson, member of the executive committee for project OSCAR, spoke about the two satellites which have already been successfully launched, and on the new satellite to be launched in September.
• Bill Waters, also of Project OSCAR, who spoke to the club about processing the data from OSCAR II. The club agreed to reduce this data for eventual computer analysis.
• Harry Engwicht, Pacific Division Director of the ARRL, who spoke about the American Radio Relay League, its history and its future.

The club plans further activities for the next school year including a vigorous membership drive during activities day of Pre-Reg week.

All in all the club has had a fairly successful year. Work will be done this summer by local members in an attempt to have an even better station and program for next year.
