Volume II, Number 1 -- Fall Quarter 1985

Welcome to the Stanford Amateur Radio Club Fall Quarter 1985. An influx of new members, new officers, and new equipment all make this one of the most exciting times for the radio club in recent history.

At this time we would like to introduce the new officers selected from members present at the Fall Quarter open house meeting. Acting as president will be sophomore EE major Laura Thomas. The vice-presidency will be shared by Laura's sister Tammy, also a sophomore in the EE program, and freshman Daniel Zucker, also an EE. Kathy Bishoff, a graduate student in EE, will serve as treasurer, and Vidur Sood will act as secretary.

Brad Horak will take on the responsibility of emergency coordinator and past-president Henry Pasternack will assume the tasks of station engineer.

*** Welcome New Members ***

An informal meeting last week marked the first gathering of club members for the 1985-86 academic year. Old timers were pleasantly surprised to find themselves quite outnumbered by new students interested in getting involved with the club. An informal session allowed everyone to get acquainted and to place their names and addresses on the club roster (which you will find enclosed with this newsletter).

If you're a new member and you haven't done so already, you should take the time to become acquainted with Dr. Lane Smith, KX6T. Lane is located at the Orthopedic Research Laboratory and is the club's campus contact. He is a general source of knowledge and information regarding the club. When necessary feel free to give him a call during the day or during the evenings.

If you are having trouble finding Lane, try calling Henry Pasternack, WA2BSH, during working hours. Henry graduated last spring and now earns a living at SRI International. He'd be glad to hear from you.

Station Update

If you haven't been out to the station lately, you may want to make a point of dropping by sometime soon. A number of projects which were on the agenda last year have been completed under the leadership of Kenji Okumura and Shigue Kobayashi, last year's station engineers. Starting in late April and early May the six element monobander for 20 meters went up, followed by the restoration of the Telrex 15m and 10m monobanders. The end of summer saw the installation of the 160 meter antenna complete with bandpass filter.

In addition to the major efforts completed over spring and summer quarters, the operating consoles have been freshly organized and prepared for a new year of enthusiastic use. While you're there, you may want to admire our new array of test equipment, acquired in response to club members' requests last spring. More good news: within the next week or so, we anticipate the arrival of our new Tektronix oscilloscope, donated through the efforts of Dr. Villard and Harry Makler.

General Meeting Announcement

Make sure that you find time in your schedule to attend the next general meeting which will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 8:30 p.m. in Tressider. We will meet in the Laurel room, located near the second floor information desk. After introduction of the new officers, the meeting will include an overview of operating the station equipment and will, weather permitting, adjourn to the club station for a demonstration of the various operating facilities.
